Icaros and Songs

The icaros are songs that are sung during traditional healing ceremonies and for the maestro curandero a way to communicate with his ancestors and / or other spiritual entities such as plants, trees, rocks and animals. The maestro curandero concentrates on his icaro during a ceremony to be able to connect with these spiritual entities. Before evoking them, the maestro curandero first prays with his tabacco to the Holy Spirit and focuses on the elements air, fire, water and earth, to receive protection for the ceremony.

When the prayers are realized, the maestro curandero begins to sing his healing icaros for all participants and patients who, depending on what they need, receive healing on a physical, mental and spiritual level. Examples of diseases that can be cured through the ceremonies, songs and traditional diets with medicinal plants and trees include insomnia, depression, leukaemia, diabetes, vaginal diseases, infertile men and women, arthritis, osteoarthritis, (breast) cancer and various skin diseases.

While the maestro curandero is singing the icaros, participants who choose their spiritual path teachers and doctors receive during such ceremony the teachings of the rainforest. There exists infinitely icaros that can be learned this way through the strict diets with the plants and trees and can be used for different purposes.

Finally, when the curandero closes the ceremony properly, the maestro curandero again turns himself to the Holy Spirit and thanks is given to Him for all the healing received during the ceremony which may be expressed through an icaro.

A curandero responsible in his work handles 4 types of Icaros

1. Icaros to cure: to evoke positive energies that allow to treat the ill person.
2. Icaros of atraction: to bring energies that allow to regulate our energies that are weak at that moment and that allow us to regain strenght, wisdom and affection.
3. Icaro of protection: to protect the aura of the person.
4. Icaro of distraction: to eliminate or distract negative energies that interupt the ceremony

The icaros of atraction or sometimes called ” florecimiento ‘(= flowering) are especially for people who have never had the opportunity to be happy and successful in their love life.
