The Amazonian diets in general evoke strong cleansing and healing processes on a physical, mental and spiritual level. From experience we have seen and learned that many modern disseases have their roots in the (over)consumption of unhealthy food, alcohol and (pharmaceutical) drugs and by changing our diet, or participating in a traditional plant diet from time to time, the body gets time to purify itselves and discharge itself from the negative energies that it has absorbed. Going through these processes we do learn to understand what we as human beings really need and we can definately improve the quality of our lives this way and have more control over- and prosperity in our lives.
A diet in the Amazon must be strictly followed, as the ‘Maestro Curandero “indicates. The relevant plant or tree that is dieted is only once drunk, early in the morning at around 5.00am, after which a shower is taken at the nearby creek or river. During some diets, Ayahuasca is taken in ceremony during the nights and in some cases other remedies are given as well. Not every plant or tree has the same diet, but generally the first diet(s) consist of white rice, fariña, potatoe, some fish and birds species from the forest, soups and salads. Salt and sugar is not allowed. When bigger trees are dieted, the diet is more strict and consist of only certain fishspecies from the creek and one ´platano´ (banana from the jungle) each day.
Products such as soap or toothpaste can be used as long as it is nature based. The duration of a diet depends on the reason why a person goes on diet. One reason could be that someone is ill and has to diet with a certain plant or tree for an indicated period, under the supervision of a “Maestro Curandero”. Depending on the disease and condition of the patient, these diets take 8 days up to 3 months.
Other example to attend “la dieta”, is if a person wishes to learn to work with the plants and trees, better said: he or she wants to become a Maestro Curandero. In the Amazon rainforest exists incredibly many plants and trees that can be dieted and can be learn from and in general there is a principle of minimum 8 days for each plant or tree that the person has to be in diet. Anyway, the longer a plant or tree is dieted, the more insights a person can acquire.
Within Amazonian Shamanism there are diets of 15 days, one month, three months, half a year to one year or even longer.
